What is an armed security guard?
Armed security officers have been trained and licensed to carry firearms, which they may use if the individuals or places to which they are assigned are in danger. Security officers who are armed are also known as armed guards.

Initial Requirements for Training:
Pre-Assignment Training (8 hours) – This is general introductory training. This course must be completed and a copy of the certificate submitted with your security guard application.
16-Hour On-the-Job Training. A training that relates to guarding duties, worksite requirements, and employer demands. This course must be completed within 90 days of starting work as a security guard.
To enroll in this course, you must have a valid New York State Pistol Permit as well as a security guard registration. Submit a copy of your certificate with your application for an armed guard registration upgrade after you’ve completed this course successfully.
Annual Requirements for Training:
Each calendar year that you hold an armed security guard registration, you must complete an 8-hour annual in-service training course. Because your registration is valid for two years, you must complete two 8-hour Annual In-Service training sessions between the effective and expiration dates of your registration to be eligible for renewal.
Annual Firearms Training – This course must be completed each calendar year that you are registered as an armed security guard. Because your registration is valid for two years, you must complete two 8-hour annual firearms training courses between the effective and expiration dates of your registration to be eligible for renewal.
What is an unarmed security guard?
At businesses, organizations, and residential properties, unarmed security guards ensure a safe and secure atmosphere. They patrol the property, manage access, and investigate problems. They also keep an eye on security systems and surveillance cameras.
