Introduction to the case

The courtroom is meant to be the most orderly place considering that justice is always served them, but it is not always the case. There are times that brawls have transpired especially after verdicts have been pronounced and today we will be looking at such instances

Former judge Tracie’s case

Former judge Tracie Hunter was dragged off to jail by deputies to begin serving a 6-month sentence for a felony conviction related to giving confidential documents to her brother. Her supporters shouted in protest in the courtroom. Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters, who had publicly feuded with Hunter previously, asked the judge to delay her sentence so officials could evaluate her mental stability to serve jail time, and also asked Ohio’s governor to commute her sentence. The judge denied requests to delay the sentence from Hunter’s attorney, who said he planned to file a motion to dismiss the conviction. When the judge imposed the 6-month sentence, chaos erupted in the courtroom. Hunter went limp and had to be dragged out of the courtroom”

Attack of Las Vegas Judge

A man attacked a Las Vegas judge in her courtroom during sentencing. In a video that circulated, it shows the man running up and jumping over the bench to attack the judge. She and a marshal were injured in the attack. The man, Deobra Redden, was a three-time felon who was in court to be sentenced for attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. He had previously been granted probation multiple times, including by the same judge he attacked. Redden was charged with new offenses of battery and battery on a protected person for the courtroom attack. One charge indicates the victim was “substantially harmed.” The judge, Mary Kay Holthus, and the injured marshal recovered from the attack. Court officials are reviewing security protocols to protect the judiciary, public, and employees after the violent incident.”

Attack on a defense lawyer

A jury convicted four men of felony murder, one of the defendants (Travis Jamaar Davis) began punching his defense lawyer in the courtroom. This sparked a brawl where courtroom deputies had to use Tasers on three of the men. The defense lawyer (Daniel Hernandez) who was punched said he received 5 punches to the back and side of his head, resulting in bumps, bruises and scratches. He noted this was the first time in his nearly 40 years practicing law that he had been struck by a defendant.
