What is incest?
Incest is a social construct society has created to describe interfamilial romantic and sexual relationships and even marriage among family members. Humans began trying to make it “taboo” and weird, due to the familial boundaries and shared DNA that can lead to increased risks of genetic birth defects like those who get knocked up when they are older in their mid-thirties and even forties or older.
All states in the USA prohibit incest between parents and children, aunts/uncles and nieces/nephews, and grandparents and their grandchildren, whether biological or adopted ones. This is wise, because the degree of sanguinity between people this closely related crosses too many boundaries and poses more significant risks of birth defects. Additionally, many states sadly outlaw first cousin marriages and two even prohibit marriage and sexual relationships between second cousins. All states allow procreating and marriage between third cousins though, so at least that is good.
Why does incest occur?
Our incest private eyes note that there are four main reasons why incest among family members occurs, though they can overlap and can have multiple underlying causes for one incest incident. These causes typically include, but are not limited to, the following:
Accidental Incest:
Some family members accidentally ended up in sexual relationships or even married, because they did not know they were related. Whether they had different mothers or fathers and were half siblings, had unknown parents, or had a sperm or egg donor and did not know who it was, there are plenty of cases where family members of all degrees of sanguinity have engaged in sex and have even gotten married without knowing they were family.
Toxic Families & Poor Boundaries:
Some families are extremely toxic, with no one having ever taught the parents how to set proper boundaries for themselves or respect those of other people. Thus, they have difficulties teaching their own children what they themselves never learned. When this occurs, our criminal private investigators note that they get an increased number of calls and e-mails asking for help with incest private investigations to help solve these complex cases.
Living Situations/Environmental Factors:
Some family members live extremely far away from other people, and this was especially true in earlier times when countries began developing and more people lived in the countryside. Facing few romantic and sexual options, some people might just decide that their cousin or sibling do not look so bad after all.
Sexually Abusive Family Members:
Some family members are sexually abusive toward others. The people they harm may be family members, because many biologically related people or even adopted family members who live together as family naturally develop a disdain for sexual activity with one another. However, this does not always prevent all incest, but sexual intercourse and marriage among cousins should not be a crime unless force or statutory lack of consent is involved.
Incest Along Different Degrees of Family Members:
There are several levels of incest among family members in the human realm that some clients ask our private investigators to solve. These include, but are not limited to, the following:
Cousin/Cousin Incest:
This is the most basic level of incestuous relationships that involve family member sex. Unless it is nonconsensual by statute or force which thus necessitates a subsequent rape or sexual assault private investigation, our PI agency does not investigate this type of “crime.” This is because we do not believe that sexual relationships among two consenting cousins, regardless of their degree of family relations, is or should be a crime. Indeed, many states rightfully do not even consider cousin sex or cousin marriage to be a crime – and it should not be!
States that do and do not allow first cousin marriages as of the date of this page’s publication in 2026 include, but are not limited to, the following:

Validity of Second & Cousin Marriages in the USA:
Interestingly, only two states prohibit second cousin marriages, those being Kentucky and Nevada. Our criminal private investigator notes that prosecutions for even first cousin marriages in prohibited states, let alone second cousin marriages, is rare.
Validity of Third Cousin Marriages in the USA:
Our consanguinity private investigator notes that all fifty states allow third cousins to marry, as they should. It is too bad that all states do not allow second and first cousins to freely marry as well. Only the enlightened states allow it.
Parent/Child Incest:
No state allows sexual relations or marriages between parents and children. This is because fully biological parents and kids share about fifty percent of the same DNA. Our incest private detective notes that the risk of genetic defects, let alone boundary violations, is far too great.
Sibling/Sibling Incest:
Much like marriage and sexual relationships between parents and children, our private investigators note that no states allow fully biological siblings or even adopted siblings to marry or mate. Though they share no genetic DNA relation, societal norms and laws tend to treat them as equals to biological siblings. Thus, all state outlaw all sibling sex and marriages.
Aunt or Uncle/Niece or Nephew Incest:
Our private investigation agency does, on occasion, also receive requests for incest private investigations for sexual activity and marriage between aunts/uncles and their nephews/nieces. This type of incest does indeed happen, and interestingly it is much more common than one might think. No states allow aunts/uncles and their nephews/nieces to marry or have sexual intercourse, because unlike cousin sex and cousin marriages, boundaries and DNA between aunts/uncles and their nephews/nieces are far too close in nature to make it healthy.
Grandparent/Grandchild Incest:
No states in the United States of America allow grandparents and their grandchildren to engage in sex or become a married couple. The age differences are not prohibited if both people are of legal age, our private eyes in Oklahoma City note. However, the boundaries and shared DNA between grandparents and their grandchildren still rests at about twenty-five percent. While half the shared DNA between parents and their kids, it is still about double that of two first cousins and has a significantly higher chance of birth defects if children result from sexual activity.
Why hire an incest private detective to conduct incest private investigations?
When our clients suspect their family members or even friends of engaging in sexual activity and/or marriage, they may hire us to investigate. They may think it is gross, or they may have a vested community interest in helping to prevent birth defects. Most cases of incest that our private detective agency in OKC receives involve some type of child sexual abuse. Thus, our rape private investigators are trained and experienced at uncovering child sexual abuse and marriages amongst family members.
When you want to know whether your sister is sleeping with your child or if Grandpa was the one who knocked up your niece or first cousin, our experts can collaborate with you to help find the truth.
How do incest private eyes solve incest cases?
To solve incest cases, our private eyes near me typically conduct the following legal strategies to obtain results:
Surveillance:
One method for our private investigators near me to solve incest cases among family members is to follow them around and see where they go, what they do, etc. While our surveillance investigations can tell our clients if family members go to the courthouse to get married or stay over at one another’s homes overnight, it is highly unlikely that we will catch them having sexual intercourse in public. However, it is possible that our legal staff might see them holding hands, making out, etc.
Interviews:
While more invasive, it is possible to hire a private detective at our private investigation agency in Oklahoma City to go and interview family members, friends, and acquaintances, to see if anyone knows of or will admit to sexual relationships or even marriage among family members who are related more closely than just first, second, or third cousins. You would be surprised at how much information people will give up to our private detectives in Edmond, Oklahoma!
Voluntary Genetic Testing/Involuntary Subpoenaed Genetic Testing:
Genetic testing is also another option to determine if a child is an inbred baby, and if both suspected parents are willing to volunteer their DNA samples, our private investigation agency can help facilitate the genetic testing for the two people on behalf of the client. If one or both people remain unwilling to cooperate, then we can connect you with one of our family law attorneys in Oklahoma to help with lawsuits and subpoenas for the information.
Marriage Records Checks:
If a client suspects a marriage among biologically related family members or even adopted ones outside of cousin marriages, then they can hire a PI at our firm to help review marriage records in states where the two people have lived and/or for states that allow cousin marriages. If we find a marriage license for the two individuals in question, our staff can alert our clients and, if needed, local authorities, so they can take the most appropriate action.
Reviewing Communicative Messages, E-mails, & CCTV Footage, etc.:
You can also locate a private detective at our Oklahoma private investigation agency to help review CCTV footage, e-mails between close family members, direct messages, text messages, etc., that we have ready access to. When looking through this electronic, printed, and video data, we might be able to make connections about sexual activity or even marriage between two siblings, an aunt/uncle and her/his niece/nephew, or even between parents and children.
